The Organization of Disabled in Iceland

The Organization of Disabled in Iceland (abbreviated as ODI) was founded in 1961. There are 34 member associations. Representatives of all the member associations sit on the Board of ODI. The purpose and goals of ODI may be found in ODI’s constitution.

Various social consultations and services are provided.

Legal consultation is provided on ewery second Mondays and is free. It is necessary to make an appointment in advance, tel. 530-6700.

Deacon’s services are offered – open house – on Tuesdays, prayers and gospel evenings on Thursdays.

Brynja – the Housing Fund of the Organization of Disabled in Iceland is a private institution.

Hringsjá – work training for the handicapped, located at Hátún 10d. ODI operates Hringsjá under a service agreement with the Ministry of Social Affairs.

ODI Workplace. The Organization of Disabled in Iceland operates the workplace in accordance with a service agreement with the Area Office of Affairs of the Handicapped in Reykjavík.

ODI publishes the ODI Magazine once a year, 17,000 copies per issue.

ODI is a member of Icelandic Lotto and the Computer Centre for the Disabled.

ODI has representatives on various boards.

ODI is a member of:

Handikaporganisasjonenes Nordiska Råd (HNR), which is a co-operative venue for Nordic associations of the handicapped. Chairmen and directors sit on the Council.

Nordiska Handikappolitiska Rådet (NHPR), a consultative and policy-making institute concerned with affairs of the handicapped for the Nordic Council of Ministers and its collaborating entities.

Nordens Välfärdscenter (NVC), the Nordic Council of the Handicapped.

Handikappede Kvinner I Norden, which works for the rights of handicapped women.

European disability forum (EDF), which is an umbrella organization of the disabled in Europe and has more than 50 million members.

Rehabilitation International (RI), international rehabilitation union.

Disabled People International (DPI), international union of the disabled.
